What is SOAP?

SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is a specification for communicating structured information within a Web services implementation.  It relies on XML for its formatting and RPC and HTTP for it negotiation and transmission.  SOAP usually provides the foundation for any web services protocol stack.  The protocol is versatile, independent of platform and language, and simple and extensible.  It utilizes an internet application layer protocol like SMTP or HTTP as a transport.
