How to manage Cisco network outages

The purpose of IT systems and services within an organization is to support the relevant business operations that bring in the revenue to the organization, provide the required functionality to the environment, and ensure the infrastructure for communication, storage, and processing.  High Availability requirements refer to the near perfect availability of IT systems and services to the organization.

Availability is perceived in terms of the overall uptime of the system; that is given a period of time, the percentage of time the system is available.  Downtime of a system generally refers to outages:  both minor and major.  However, certain systems have a greater requirement for available over other systems.  The general categories of outages with the maximum downtime allowed for minor and major outages are:

  • Continuous availability 1 minute 2 hours
  • Mission-critical 10minutes 8 hours
  • Business-important 1 hour 3 days
  • Business-foundation 1 day 1 week
  • Business edge > 1 week > 1 month
