Governance Extensions serve to allow additional structured data to be held against objectives and business services. The extensions scope consists of the abilities to apply measures to objectives, to apply contracts to service communication or interactions, and to define reusable service qualities. The governance extension will also create diagrams to show ownership and management of systems. These extensions are useful when an organization is considering IT change and has granular requirements for service levels that differ between multiple services, or when an organization is looking to change its operational governance practices and has a strong focus on business drivers, goals, and objectives.
Services Extensions create a concept of IS services with business services to provide a sophisticated model of the service portfolio. IS services are supported by applications and create a layer of abstraction to ease the impact of constraints on business services. Service extensions are used when a preset definition of services is in place but does not align to technical or architectural needs, or a different language is used by business and IT to describe similar capabilities, IT services do not align with business need, or IT is taking initial steps to engage business about IT architectures.
